Rosacea

This is a chronic skin condition that causes facial redness, enlarged capillaries, inflamed bumps and pimples. It’s most often seen in people with fair skin who are prone to facial flushing and blushing. The exact cause is unknown, but it seems to run in families.

Rosacea is a recurring condition that cannot be completely cured but can be successfully controlled with the identification and avoidance of triggering factors. These may be heat, spicy food, alcohol or hot drinks. Our dermatologists may recommend other treatments such as creams, light therapy (lasers and/or broadband light treatment), or in severe flare-ups, a course of antibiotics. At ID+LC we understand the impact that rosacea can have on your self-esteem and the potential embarrassment of flare-ups. We will do our best to find a treatment that best suits your condition and individual circumstances.

If left untreated, an associated problem called rhinophyma, where enlarged oil glands cause skin on the nose to thicken, may develop. Severe cases of rhinophyma can be disfiguring and usually require laser treatment to help the skin return to normal.

In severe cases of either rosacea or rhinophyma, laser therapy is partly subsidised by Medicare.
